Tommy is a short-necked, freshwater turtle that was washed up on Tugun beach after heavy overnight rain caused the creeks to swell resulting in him being flushed out to the ocean.
Fresh water turtles cannot survive in the salt water of the ocean. After heavy rain, the Wildlife Hospital often admits a large number of fresh water turtles that have been found on the local beaches. It is always best to bring any beached turtles into our Wildlife Hospital for a check-up.
We keep beached fresh water turtles in large rehab ponds where they wait to be released back into the local creeks when the water levels drop and the creek flow returns to normal. Tommy is likely to stay with us for about 5 days before being returned to Currumbin Creek where he was found.
