Oakley the turtle and his friends
This week’s patients are Oakley and his friends. Following Cyclone Debbie we had over 30 fresh water turtles admitted to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital in one weekend alone. When there is a significant weather event that causes our fresh water creeks to rise, turtles get flushed from their homes ending up in all sorts of places such as the beach, parklands and backyards. Once turtles are displaced from their homes they try and find their way back, this is when they run into trouble.
Many of the turtles admitted had sustained injuries from vehicle hits and domestic animal attacks while trying to find their way home. It takes months for patients like Oakley to recover which will take us into winter. Winter is not the right time to release turtles which means that their hospital visit will be extended.
