Patient of the Week
This week’s patient is Marina.
Marina is an Azure Kingsfisher. Azure Kingfishers are Australia’s smallest and arguably most dazzling Kingfishers. The mixture of royal blue and vibrant orange makes for a very pretty little bird.
Marina was found on the ground in Upper Burringbar NSW. We believe that she flew into a window and radiography confirmed that Marina had a complete oblique mid-shaft fracture of her left radius and ulna. Marina has undergone a surgical procedure to have a pin placed to repair these bones (see the repaired wing containing the pin in the x-ray image).
Kingfishers are a very delicate species and can struggle to endure a large amount of stress, so at this stage Marina’s prognosis is still guarded. She is however looking good following her procedure and we have our fingers crossed that Marina will make a full recovery and be returned to the wild.
